Halle Berry isn’t afraid to experiment with her hair in an edgy way.

That hurt. The 56-year-old actress shared her new look, which elevated her current blonde cut to a whole new level, on Instagram on Saturday.

In a video that was recorded in her bathroom, the Oscar winner said, “So that’s how the haircut started… and that’s how it’s going.” She had the same hairstyle from the front, but when she turned around and showed her back, it was clear that things were a little different. In addition to adding a series of zigzag shapes that cascaded up and around the slope, Berry buzzed the hair on the side of her head.

“Oh yeah,” Selma Blair commented, while Arsenio Hall just wrote, “Bang!” Jamie Foxx responded with a series of fire emojis, while Tamron Hall simply wrote, “Damnnnnnnn!” Several followers praised Berry for her willingness to be a little unconventional.

Berry’s short haircuts are the stuff of hairstyling history. She earned an Oscar for her performance in the 2001 drama monster ball and made history as the first black actress to take home an Oscar for Best Actress. In tears, Berry took the stage to accept her trophy while sporting a pixie cut that spawned a million copycats.

In the years since, Berry has played with her hair choices and made it clear that her beauty choices can’t be dictated by someone else’s agenda. Widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful women in the world, Berry has made it clear that she has her own idea of what beauty means.

“Beauty is so subjective, but that word has been associated with me since the beginning of my career. And so I had to work really hard to diffuse what beauty is and what beauty does and what beauty can do,” she said CBS Sunday morning‘s Kelefa Sanneh last year. “Do you think this package I’m walking around in spares me any real life situation?”
