When Jordan got to her student apartment building at around 1 a.m. on July 2017, three men were waiting for her. The men took her personal possessions and pointed a gun at her. But that wasn’t the worst part. The situation soon became even scarier.
They were unable to operate her car because it was a stick shift, so two of them grabbed Jordan and forced her to drive them to a gas station. The third man ran away. It was later revealed to Jordan that they were teenagers.
The teens told Jordan to use her debit card and get money out of an ATM machine. They also told her they were going to violate her. That was when Jordan decided to take action. She was inspired by a story that her mom once told her.
Jordan, who’s a criminal justice major, explained during an interview with WCBD News2:
“I thought back to my mom. She was almost a victim of assault when she was in college, and she fought back and fought the man off, and I thought you know, I’m going to be strong like my mom, I’m going to get myself out of this.”
Jordan’s mother, Beth Turner, made sure her daughter was never going to be a victim. She wisely advised Jordan to be strong and fight back if she ever found herself in a similar situation.
According to ABC News 4, Jordan said:
“My mom always told me, you know, don’t let them get you alone, because then you have no help, you have no hope for passerby’s to see you or hear you, and you have no help to get out.”
After Jordan withdrew the money from the ATM, she started planning her escape. She decided not to put her seat belt back on. Instead, she impulsively jumped out of the car while she was driving.
Jordan explained:
“I just kind of thought in my head, ‘Do it, do it, do it,’ and then the next thing I know, my hands were on the handle, I was opening the door and I was staring at the pavement.”
When she got out of the car, she sought help. Two cars drove by without stopping. Fortunately, the driver of the third car came to Jordan’s aid, helping save her. The college student’s only regret is that she didn’t see the reaction on their faces when she dove out of the car.
According to ABC News 4, the college student told reporters:
“They were in a moving vehicle, without a driver, and a 20-year-old girl just outsmarted you. I wish I could’ve seen their faces at that moment, so that they knew that I might have been a victim, but I was not victimized.”
Authorities arrested the teens, who were 15 and 17 years old. They have also been involved in several crimes in the area.
